New website design Nov. 10 2007

A major update to this homepage. The website has had the same look since 2004 and we had grown a little tired of it. We hope you like our new face to the world, though most of the content are the same as before, just some updated screenshots.

As for the program itself, development goes on, 90-something changes in the changelog since the release of version 1.2.4. We do not have a timetable for the next release, but it is getting closer as the code matures and some more glitches are beeing worked out.

New release, version 1.2.4 - Jun. 09 2007

The GNOME Commander team is proud to announce the next stable release of GNOME Commander: 1.2.4.

This release has some new features and some bugs have been fixed.

GCMD goes C++ - Feb. 26 2007

The Gnome Commander code has now begun a migration from C to C++. Both the HEAD and 1.3 devel branch are now initially migrated and seemes to be working quite allright. Seen from a user perspective this migration is not supposed to change anything, the change is done due to coding reasons. Tests and bugreports on the GCMD SVN code are of course, as usual, much appreciated. Further info on how to download the source from SVN can be found on our Development page, but remember that this unreleased SVN code is to be considered unstable and only for testing purposes.

GCMD in Fedora - Jan. 03 2007

Gnome Commander has now found its way into the Fedora "Extras" repositry. Users of Fedora 5 and 6 has now got convienient official binary Fedora packages to install from, available for the architechtures i386, x86_64 and ppc. The authors of Gnome Commander thanks the team behind Fedora, and wish them a happy 2007.

New release, version 1.2.3 - Dec. 12 2006

Fastest new release so far ... This is a bug fix to the problem introduced in the yeasterday release 1.2.2. Please upgrade to this latest one where this bug 384752 - Permissions for new dirs is fixed (we hope that not too many of you had time to upgrade to 1.2.2, sorry for the inconvenience).

The GNOME Commander team is proud to announce the next stable release of GNOME Commander: 1.2.2.

This release is mostly about bugfixes and not so much about new features, though the advanced renaming tool now has got support for ID3 metags in advanced file rename templates.

Call for SMB help! - Dec. 04 2006

Problem solved!
Piotr has now closed bug 349631 for v1.2.1 and the work in the 1.2.2 release can continue as planned. Thanks to the feedback on this issue.

Unfortunately we have to delay the launch of the planned 1.2.2 release. There is still a very irritating bug concerning SMB networks, which we have a hard time to pinpoint, so we need some quality bugreports and feedback on this. Our bugzilla is now stormed by mostly ubuntu users reporting gcmd crash when SMB browsing. Any help will be very welcome, since we cannot reproduce this bug. Please contact us on gcmd-devel@nongnu.org (our developer mailing list info page) if you are experiencing this bug and want to help us with info to track this down.

Version 1.2.1 stable release - Okt. 17 2006

The GNOME Commander team is proud to announce the stable release of GNOME Commander: 1.2.1.

There has now been some work done in the unstable 1.3 branch, where some things, like the start of supporting metatags in the advanced renaming tool, has made its way into this 1.2.1 release. Some bugs has of course also been fixed. You find tarballs at our downloadpage.

The upcoming 1.2.x stable release - Sept 27 2006

There has now been some work done in the unstable 1.3 branch, where some things also has made its way into the coming 1.2.x release. Though the latest stable release is still 1.2.0 for those of you that do not want to test before official release.

1.2.0 Released - May 07 2006

The GNOME Commander team is proud to announce the stable release of GNOME Commander: 1.2.0. Get the new release from our downloadpage.

On the "surface" there are not much difference from the last release 1.1.7, but underneath there are a couple of new features and some bugs have been fixed. This version-jump to 1.2.0 also marks the first stable release from the new GNOME Commander team, it is also the first release under the new version numbering where new and experimental functions first are developed and tested in an unstable odd numbered development branch of the project. The 1.2.x version will get updates, bugfixes and also successful features backported from the 1.3.x devel branch.

Call for translators - Apr 06 2006

A message to all native speakers of non-English languages.

As we are getting closer to the release of GNOME Commander 1.2.0, we need updated translations before the release that is planned to happen around mid April.

If you'd like to contribute a translation, please read the guide on the development page to see how to do a translation. All contributors are very welcome and will get the gratitude of GNOME Commander users world wide!

The mailinglists are up and working again.
For a long time the only mails coming of the lists have been spam, but now the lists are being moderated again since the new project management gained admin access to them. All posts from non members of the lists are now being held for approval, this will stop spam effectively. Tough anyone are welcome to sign up on the lists.

1.1.7 Released - Feb 12 2006

Gnome Commander 1.1.7 is now released, available at the gnome.org FTP-server. This release has some bug fixes and a couple of new features, this release requires GTK+ of version 2.6.0 or above.

New Features:

• Super fast internal file viewer for text and images.
• Copying selected file name(s) to clipboard.
• Inserting selected file full path to the cmdline when pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
• Some new or updated translations.
• A couple of new key bindings.

New project maintainer! - Feb 06 2006

This project has been unmaintained for quite some time, two years since last release, but it is not unmaintained anymore. Piotr Eljasiak has agreed to maintain and keep on developing this project. One more developer, Assaf Gordon has also joined the project and recently submitted some new code and patches. So, this project is alive again and the work for next release 1.1.7 has begun = more news to come...

1.1.6 Released - Jan 20 2004

This version improves keyboard navigation and adds some other miscellaneous polish.

1.1.5 Released - Jan 12 2004

This release mostly consists of numerous small bug fixes. The only new feature is that the directory indicator above each file list now can be used to navigate to parent directories.

1.1.4 Released - Nov 24 2003

Bug fixes:

• Fixed bug when selecting multiple files with shift+mouse button.
• Stopped superfluous updates of the file-list on machines with the imon kernel patch applied.
• Cleaned up the file-popup menu.
• Fixed "File not found"-bug when browsing to the parent dir when the parent dir contained spaces.
• Fixed possible async error when cancelling a xfer operation.
• Reworked the layout tab and removed the colors tab in the options dialog.
• Improved plugin-system.

1.1.3 Released - Nov 14 2003

Bug fixes:

• Fixed a crash that happened when moving files on a machine with a snappy FAM installation.
• Accessing files on mounted devices should now work better.
• Configured devices should not disappear anymore.
• Fixed so that the feature where the terminal window stays open after a program has finished works more reliably.
• Fixes bug where a new directory would appear many times in the same file-list until reloaded.

New features:

• The delete confirmation dialog can now be disabled.
• Better error messages when a mount fails.
• Made the calculation of a directory's total size start automaticly when the file prefs dialog is shown.
• Added filter for backup files and added that and the filter for hidden files to the main menu for faster access.

We're getting close to v1.0 so make sure to report all problems with the 0.9.11 release to the mailinglist. A common problem if running RedHat8 or Mandrake8.2 is instabilities in the search-dialog. See section 6 in the README for info on how to deal with that.

Not so much big news this time but some annoying bugs were fixed

Highlights

• Added support for $p in advrename dialog. This will give you the parent directory.
• Fixed a bug where deleting a directory sometimes only emptied the directory but not delete it.
• Fixed so that the ".." directory is visible in ftp-sessions.

Important 0.9.10 information - Feb 25 2003

If you have lots of ftp-servers stored in your ~/.gnome-commander/ftp-servers file you should make a backup of that file before upgrading, otherwise they will be lost since the format of that file has changed in this version.

Since the file is stored as text the motivated user should find it quite easy to convert to the new format in any text editor.

0.9.10 Released - Feb 24 2003

The 0.9.10 tarball is now available. Notice that Savannah has some bug in the file area that makes this release appear in the end of the list and not at the top. Here is a direct link.

Lots of user visible changes in this version:

Highlights

• Fixed an imageloading bug when using themes other than the default one.
• New bookmark feature.
• New template feature in the advanced-rename dialog. See doc/advrename.txt in the tarball for details.
• Nicer file-properties dialog with rename support.
• Dragging files to the ".." directory is now possible.
• The toolbar and buttonbar can now be hidden.

0.9.9 Released - Jan 19 2003

There are not so many new features in this version. On the other hand there are lots of improvements all over the program so the old features are now a lot more useable than they used to be.

Bad directory name in 0.9.8 release - Jul 17 2002

If you downloaded the 0.9.8 release as source, you may have noticed that the directory name in the tarball was wrong. That has been fixed now, but there is no need to download again since the directory name is all that has been changed.
